Review summary: The Power Pet PX-1 is a well built unit and has been completely reliable.  Aside from a couple of small issues that might not be important to you, this is the best door I've tested and used. I highly recommended this unit if you can afford it and gets our highest rating.

Pros: Opens without flap, raccoon resistant, excellent seal when closed, well built, works for a mix of small and large pets.

Cons: Expensive, collar design could be better

After installing 3 other pet doors at this location, this was the keeper!  While it may be too expensive for most, if you have a raccoon problem this is the door for you.  As your pet approaches the door, an ultrasonic transmitter on the pet's collar will command the door to open. It slides up without the pet having to push on anything.  Once the pet is through the door, it slides back down slowly to seal the opening again. The door lowers by gravity, so even if your pet remains in the doorway as it closes, it will stop without hurting your pet. When closed, a pin automatically locks the door in place, so it can't be lifted up until your pet returns.

The door is transparent and made of Lexan – far stronger than any other pet doors I've seen. Even with raccoons working it over, no scratches have appeared (although they leave a lot of mud on the door!). The housing is made of high-strength ABS composite, and has also held up well with lots of abuse.

Eight versions are available, with two sizes (medium and large) for door or wall mount, and six versions for a sliding patio door. The SG patio door series has a PX-1 or PX-2 mounted in an aluminum frame that extends to the top of the opening, with a spring-loaded adjustable top. The frame includes a tempered glass insert above the pet door. Because there is no door to push through the medium size (PX-1) works fine for smaller pets too.  An optional tunnel is available for wall mount or unusually thick doors (beyond 1.75”).

It has many features, including on/off, separate controls for disabling each direction (going in or out), manual open along with separate inside and outside sensitivity controls (for setting the distance where your pet is before it opens). It also had indicators showing what options are set and a low battery indicator.

The door can run on AC (with included AC adapter) or a backup gel-cell battery (extra expense item) that works without AC for 30-days or so depending on use.  I ran it for 20 days on battery power alone and it still was going fine. When the door is connected to AC, the battery is charged.  If AC cannot be connected to the door, then you can use the battery alone, and remove it to charge it up. If you only use the battery (no AC) we recommend you get 2 batteries so you always have a charged battery to put in the door.

For small pets, the collar transmitter is a bit large.  I'd be concerned with pets under 8 pounds or so. The collar battery lasted about 4 months and was easy to replace.  As the collar battery life neared the end, the range got shorter before the door would sense it, which was easy to notice. You can also check the collar battery with a pushbutton in the collar that lights an indicator. It gets dim as the battery is near the end.

Every 2 weeks or so, I'd find the Collar transmitter was turned off. It appears your pet can snag the off switch when scratching or cleaning (its a small button you pull out to turn off the collar). I first put tape over the switch which seems to work for a few months as there really isn't a need for the switch in the first place. More recently, I pulled it apart and soldered the switch to be always on. I expect pets without sharp claws will not have this problem.

While not as big an issue for larger animals, the collar strap is hard to adjust, difficult to remove, and has no elastic in case the collar gets hung up on something.  I replaced the strap with a collar from a Staywell pet door – a much better design with an easy to remove clasp.

There is no limit to the number of pets that can use the same door, so long as each has the transmitter-collar. There is no key coding on the transmitter, so if your neighbor purchases the same unit, their pets can use your door too.

Keep in mind that most electronic doors, like this one, has mechanics and electronics that could eventually fail. Should anything break, you may have to order parts or ship it back to the manufacturer for replacement. While my door has been working fine, a neighbor with the same door found it made a large clunking noise when it closed. After about about 6 months a small part failed. He was able to open it up and fix it without contacting the company. It also solved the loud noise problem. In their case, many more pets use the door than my door, which may have contributed to the early failure.

Even with the few issues we've run across, I still highly recommend this door. It appears well built well and holds up to repeated attacks by other animals. It also has the best environmental seal of any doors we've used, preventing heat loss in the winter and cooling loses in the summer. The seal is tight enough that ants and other insects can't get through when its closed.
